History of PioneerWorks

Opened in 2012, PioneerWorks is a nonprofit cultural centre. It was founded by a group of artists that envisioned it as an institution where artists and scientists from various backgrounds could meet and discuss ideas. The building itself dates to 1866, and was originally Pioneer Iron Works; the factory was active through 1866 till after World War II, when it fell into disuse and was purchased by the founders in 2011.

The building hosts science studios, a technology lab with 3D printing, a virtual environment lab for VR and AR production, a recording studio, a media lab for content creation and dissemination, a darkroom, residency studios, galleries, gardens, a ceramics studio, a press, and a bookshop. PioneerWorks holds various science programs and talk series in order to bring science to the public, while also making available workspaces for visiting scholars. Currently, Dr Janna Levin is the director of sciences at PioneerWorks; she is an astrophysicist and author and holds the position of Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Barnard College of Columbia University.
